French Painting Holiday

“...and was amazed at how the trip exceeded my expectations all the way through” (participant 2011)

“ of the best holidays I have ever had, and I've been around a bit” (participant 2004)

*Bonheur means happiness

Bonheur French Painting Holidays are limited to small groups of about 6 to 8 people. The holiday is suitable for all levels – beginners as well as experienced artists. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the fun of being in a group with like-minded people sharing an exciting and varied experience. Based in the village of Paziols, in the Fitou wine growing region, we visit outstanding painting sites. This holiday is not a painting course, it is a chance for people to paint together in wonderful surroundings. However, we do have an art tutor with us who will offer advice and help when needed and will run an introductory painting class on the first day of the holiday.

You will be led to ideal sites to paint or draw stunning landscapes, vineyards, Cathar castles, mountains and atmospheric village scenes. We will visit the picturesque harbour town of Collioure, where Matisse painted. Collioure is an inspiration to artists and reminiscent of an undiscovered St.Tropez. You will also enjoy remote villages, vineyards, rivers – and a feeling of being refreshed and inspired by a remarkable area. You will visit a Cathar castle and learn about the amazing story of the Cathars, which fascinates holidaymakers to this area.

“thank you for organising such a fantastic trip” (participant 2004)

Collioure Bell Tower and Boats Wine Tasting at Domaine de Roudene

Languedoc is the ‘undiscovered’ gem of the South of France, sometimes compared with Provence as it was in the 1950s. This is where Matisse and Derain invented Fauvism, Picasso and Braque invented Cubism.

Everywhere in this region are delights: fabulous landscapes, views of the often snow-capped Pyrénées, fashionable Perpignan, claimed by Salvador Dali to be The Centre of the Universe.

Bryan Andrews with Ruth Rankin and Artist/Tutor

Bryan Andrews Bryan Andrews, Dip. Imagework Skyros Institute, Cert. Counselling Skills.

“not least to your excellent guidance which contributed so much to us all having such a creative and rewarding time” (participant 2005)

Bryan has been leading personal development and painting holidays in France for 24 years. He teaches creativity and leads Creativity Unlimited workshops in Hertford and Imagework workshops in France, Skyros, Greece and London. He is a Trustee of Courtyard Arts. Bryan has had a successful career as a marketing consultant creating new products for companies in the UK, USA and Europe. Bryan believes that we can all lead more creative lives regardless of age, wealth or personal circumstances. He is a painter and writer and has exhibited at Courtyard Arts, Hertford, and in France. Bryan has extensive knowledge of the history of the Cathars, Languedoc's famous ‘heretics’, and delights in passing on this knowledge when on site.

Bryan and Ruth know the area very well and will select some wonderful restaurants for you to enjoy French food at reasonable prices “thank you for an excellent ‘gourmet’ week” (participant 2004) and take you to inspirational places where you can paint a variety of subjects. Bryan will propose a varied itinerary but it is flexible and can allow for special interests.

The Artist/tutor offers important support to all participants who ask for it. This is not a structured art course but he/she is on hand to give advice or ad hoc tuition to anyone who needs it. He/she also starts the holiday off with an art lesson to get you in the mood.

Art materials are not included but we do supply a handy drawing board and folding stools are provided. Bring watercolours, acrylics, canvases, sketch books. IMPORTANT: Any paints must be carried in your hold luggage, not hand luggage. Strictly speaking, the rules on the Ryanair website specify no paints at all, but we usually find that if they are tucked away in the hold luggage it is not a problem.

Following the success of the 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 Exhibitions there will again be an opportunity for participants to exhibit their work at Courtyard Arts, Hertford. You have the potential of selling your paintings and inviting friends to an exciting Private View. Date and cost to be advised.
